Poetry Slam III

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Poetry Slam II

Life Is Fine by Langston Hughes

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
I might've sunk and died.

But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!

I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn't a-been so high
I might've jumped and died.

But it was High up there! It was high!

So since I'm still here livin',
I guess I will live on.
I could've died for love--
But for livin' I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry--
I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

Art and human behavior

Celestina's House

This painting explores the complexities of matriarchal and familial relationships

Art and human nature

Art and the human condition

Art and the human struggle

Artists, such as Kanye West, use music as a form of art to sing about the human struggle

The naked human struggle to survive

I'm having a catharsis

This past week was one of my busiest weeks this school year. I have been studying constantly with no time to get my mind off of school work. I have taken a break from studying to go to the gym and get a good workout in to get my mind off homework.

Favorite work of art

Starry Night

Starry Night is a painting by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The painting depicts the view outside his sanitarium room window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. The painting has been reproduced many times and is one of his most renowned paintings. What really sticks out to me is the way van Gogh painted the night sky.

Lane Stadium

Lane Stadium/Worsham Field is a stadium located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It is home to the Virginia Tech Hokies, a college football team. It was rated the number one home field advantage in all of college football in 2005 by Rivals.com. It is also ranked #2 on ESPN.com's "Top 10 Scariest Places To Play", behind LSU's Tiger Stadium.

Why I believe this film is a work of art

The Wrestler

No one else could have played Randy "The Ram" Robinson with the compassion and energy Rourke brings to the role --it's painful to see the fading professional wrestler coming to terms with both his mortality and emptiness of his life outside the ring, and this is largely due to Rourke's excellent acting. Twenty years after the defining match of his career, Randy is still a fan favorite and loving his work--until he suffers a heart attack. The film follows Robinson as he tries to adjust to living without wrestling, reconnect with his estranged daughter, and kindle a bond with a friend who works in a strip club.
This isn't just a film about professional wrestling, but Aronofsky gets that part right. He does a beautiful job showing the sport with realism without mocking it. He highlights the humor, but never makes fun of it. He doesn't just deconstruct the mythical images of wrestlers' performances, but he also destroys their apparent rage towards each other. It's clear that these guys are friend--they care about and respect each other. These other wrestlers in the film are all played by professionals, and they do a great job with the acting. The film respects them and their world, and demands the same from the audience.
Another aspect of the film is its music. The character of Randy is a big '80s rock fan, and for the film, they got the rights to use Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Cild o' Mine." On the softer side, Bruce Springsteen wrote "The Wrestler" for the credits, and its sweet melancholy serves as the perfect coda for the film.
Overall, 'The Wrestler' is great. It's a rich, round film that smoothly weaves together pathos and comedy and soul. It's funny and dramatic, tear-jerking and tough.

Meet this artist I know

Flight of the Conchords

Flight of the Conchords is a Grammy Award winning New Zealand comedy duo composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. Billing themselves as "Formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo accapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo," the group uses a combination of witty observation, characterization and acoustic folk guitars. The duo's comedy and music became the basis of a BBC radio series and then an American television series, which premiered in 2007, also called Flight of the Conchords.

Dance

Christopher Walken in the music video, Weapon of Choice.

What would be cooler than taking an actor who's famous for a certain style of character and letting him perform in a completely new way? Director Spike Jonze lets Christopher Walken, who is known for his serious acting, perform a solo dance routine through an empty hotel lobby. The video brought Jonze 6 MTV music video awards, and Walken a whole new fanbase.

This music video is a true work of art

Thriller- Michael Jackson

The video for Michael Jackson's song "Thriller" is consistently on the top of any 'Best Video" list for a reason... it really is the best! Say what you want about Mr. Jackson now, but at the time of the video's release, he could do no wrong. At 14 minutes, it is one of the longest videos to be produced. At a cost of almost half a million dollars, it was the most expensive video ever made up to that point. It incorporated acting scenes along with the song. The special effects at that time were unparalleled. There are so many iconic features of the video, from Jackson's red and black jacket to the zombified dance moves of the creatures. In short, Thriller absolutely deserves to be at the top of the list for being the most groundbreaking.
